Oil-Free, Egg-Free 100% Whole Wheat Challah

4 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
6 T sugar
2 T agave
5 T applesauce
flax seed eggs
1 cup water
2 heaping tsp dry-active yeast
  • place all ingredients in bread machine pan, dry ones first
  • If it is humid or raining outside, use less water (about 3/4 cup)
  • set machine for whole wheat dough cycle
  • when dough is ready, preheat oven to 200 and then turn oven off
  • divide dough into six equal parts, adding flour if necessary
  • form two braided challahs and place in 2 greased loaf pans
  • place them in the oven and let them sit for 30 min
  • remove the pans and preheat oven to 350
  • bake for 25-30 minutes
